Ubuntu install problem

Whilst attempting to install Ubuntu onto a Windows Vista Machine
using the install in Windows Method [to give dual boot- that is right isn't it?]
The progress bar got about 50% done when it stopped and the
'You don't have the permissions' came up

What sort of problem is this Ubuntu or Windoze?
and how does one get around it?

Thanx in anticipation
J

Since Ubuntu shouldn't be running at that point I think the installer is complaining that Windows doesn't allow it to do anything, may be bootloader installation or configuration. Have you granted that rights to the installer?

This is a shot in the dark, but are you booting to the installation media or trying to run it from inside Windows? The first option is the correct one.

Sorry, but no. Both methods are correct with Ubuntu. Have a look here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide

You are installing it on Windows machine as an application not making it dual boot.
I'm not sure but the solution could be that you just download the Ubuntu ISO and put it in where your wubi is located and then try to relaunch the wubi again. But as I told you I'm not sure.

Thank you all for your replies
I shall be revisiting the problem during the latter part of next week
It so happens that the machine is currently infected with the Windows Debug Center scam -that keeps the Internet connection if the view declines to play.
My time was spent trying the remove that and so far failed- hence try to by pass Windows.

I have advised the owner to get all data off the machine and will then carry out the 'D' drive repair function when I make another visit.

Ah, I missed the "install in Windows method" in OP's first post. Thanks TobiSGD.

Did you try downloading a free trial of some antivirus like norton on a different computer, then bringing it over by USB drive, then installing it? If the only thing it does is lock out the internet then you should be able to local install a free trial because that doesn't need activation. Then, run full system scan.

The machine in question has 'paid for Norton' as its AV protection.- might that be the problem?

The installation I was trying is from a CD. so I could next time I visit run the 'live' CD version- that visit will be in a week or so.
