ubuntu and VMware server

I tried to install vmware on my system. it got all the way through and hung up trying to input the serial#. never installed completely and now won't uninstall. and has rendered my synaptic package manager useless. gives an error and says:E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report. Do I need to format my computer and start over?

I hope not.

Which Ubuntu are you using. Please put it in your profile & keep that up to date. I know dpkg indicates some flavor of Debian, but which?

BTW, did you If so, did you try to do it w/ root (administrator) privilege? I.e, did you remember to use sudo? &, of course, what happened?
