Failed to install VMWare GSX Server in Ubuntu Breezy
Hi! I get the following error when configuring VMWare in Ubuntu:
Unable to find the compiler specified in the CC environnment variable:
"/usr/bin/gcc-3.4".
Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.
Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "3.4.5", while you are trying to use
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.0.2". This configuration is not supported and VMware
Server cannot work in such configuration. Please either recompile your kernel
with "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.0.2", or restart ./vmware-config.pl with CC
environment variable pointing to the "gcc" version "3.4.5".
For more information on how to troubleshoot module-related problems, please
visit our Web site at "http://www.vmware.com/download/modules/modules.html" and
"http://www.vmware.com/support/reference/linux/prebuilt_modules_linux.html".
Execution aborted.
Can anyone help me how to make VMWare work?

install gcc 3.4 along side gcc 4. then you will have two versions happily existing, and the installer would have found the one it wanted from the original path it tried to access.

vmware
ok, I get the same error with the same distribution.
I installed gcc 3.4 as suggested, and progress a little further until I get to the following road block.
________________________________________________________________________________________
Trying to find a suitable vmmon module for your running kernel.
None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your
running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes]
Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]
The path "/usr/src/linux/include" is not an existing directory.
________________________________________________________________________________________
I am unsuccessfull in my attempts to find the correct location of C header files.
What path should I type?
Again, I am installing VMWare Server beta1 on a Breezy Badger distro.
Thanks,
Aksum

The installation worked with me now. I just used:
./vmware-config.pl --t
And it went thru.

That's nice to know Depam, but won't help the OP in the slightest...
aksum, it's after your kernel source, or at least headers. I don't know what ubuntu calls this package though. kernel-headers, kernel-devel, kernel-dev... something like that.
