ubuntu 8.04 restarting itself when shut down is selected

I have a machine running Hardy that is restarting itself when "shut down" is selected. happens everytime and this just started yesterday. OS has been on the machine for months, very confused.

To see if it's a Gnome issue or a execution problem, try shutting down from command line with command: sudo halt. You can also try: sudo shutdown as both should accomplish the same thing. If these work, your GDM (Gnome display manager) needs to be re-installed.

These executables are in /sbin. Example: /sbin/halt & /sbin/shutdown

dont know if this info helps but suspend is the only option that works. the command line just causes a reboot as well. hibernate and all options but suspend cause the pc to reboot, including the sudo halt / shutdown commands. this is very new and seems it must be caused by an update received in the last week or two. very confused...thanks for your help
