Ubuntu shut down X
How do i shut down x on Ubuntu - have tried init 3 nothing happens!!!

It all depends on /etc/inittab ... have a read. As far as
I recall debilian (and thus ubuntu) has an odd approach
there, even runlevel 2 has X (I may well be wrong, I usually
stay clean of these distros), try init 1 :}

ctrl + alt + backspace might do it though on a more perminant level im not so sure as i neaver got x to work with ubuntu at all!!! it allwys crashed on startup!
(i now use slackware 9.1)

Hmm, If your initab got f.eks defult runlevel 4 and you try Ctrl-Alt-Del, you just gets to the loginscreen. At least, thats what happens on both my computers.
