Ubuntu 14 - Nvidia driver hangs the OS at the login screen

Setup: ubuntu 14.04 persistent on a Lexar Tough 32gb usb (3.0), 20-60 Mb/sec write speed.
Works fine, until I enable the proprietary Nvidia driver (341), which causes the impassable logon screen (no combination of login+pass work - "incorrect credentials").

CTRL+ALT+F1 shows an infinite production of spam messages into console regarding the said drivers. Have anyone else encountered the said problem before? Thank you.

Does 14.04 include Plymouth? If so, you might try removing it. It has a history of incompatibility with tainting drivers.
