Panic over.
OK. It appears I was installing my fonts in the old 'core' font system, which worked, and which is why I could see the newly installed fonts in 'xfontsel'. The reason I couldn't use the fonts in Firefox and OpenOffice is that those apps use the new xft / fontconfig system (as do all QT3 / GTK2 apps), which my new fonts weren't installed in. That's also why putting the fonts in ~/.fonts worked (~/.fonts is one of the font paths for xft).
After moving the fonts to /usr/share/fonts and running 'fc-cache -v', the new fonts were available as intended. Easy as.
If only I'd known this an hour ago....
Dave
P.S. Could we please ditch the old font system some time soon? fontconfig is much nicer.
P.P.S. There's 18 'font's in this post. That's a lot of fonts.
