Trouble with xawtv, wecam

I found a old intel proshare video system, which includes a camera. I installed the pci card, and kcontrol>information>pci tells me it is a brooktree bt848. I am using kernel 2.4.20-8
When I start xawtv, and select video source: composite one, I get a seriosly scrambled picture. I know it is from the camera because if I bring a red floppy disk up to the camera, the xawtv ouput turns mostly red. I tried using camstream, but I get the same result. What to do?
