tried to install java 17 in elementary OS but got Java 11 instead -- how to uninstall or update to Java 17

Hello all --

Trying to get used to EOS Odin, and downloaded and installed Java SE 17 from the Oracle Website. But when I wanted to make sure what version I had with java -version, it said I had version 11.

Anyone else have this problem? I would like to update it 17 or uninstall it. How do I do those two?

you need to set the variable JAVA_HOME according to your config (= where did you install java 17)
probably: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1755...-home-for-java

Why do you want Java SE 17 - do you have specific software that requires it?

You probably have v11 because something installed via the package manager depends on it, and thus should not blindly remove it unless you want to break things.

It is perfectly valid (and often necessary) to have multiple versions installed at once, particularly with LTS versions 8 and 11.

I don't know whether Elementary's AppCenter can give you this information - if it doesn't, you'll need to use apt/dpkg on the command line.
