Talking The best wine configuration

Hello all you happy Linux users out there!!!
Now...about what I was saying...
I just installed the brand new Slackware 10 distro and because I'm not *that* new to linux i decided to do some hardening ,etc.. so I can reach my "dream" computer ...and so I did..
I was snooping around some programs and found some nice stuff... but here comes my prob... I was addicted to the windows version of yahoo messenger and .. of course I can't live without Winamp. I've considered some alternatives but the UNIX version for yahoo messenger is a piece of junk (it shouldn't even be distributed) and GAIM is pretty cool but lacks some advanced features of yahoo.
I recently installed wine but it gives weird errors (that i am unable to paste here). I install the software but i can't run it.. ironically .. I can also uninstall the software
I'd blame it on the config file, but I'm not sure....Can anyone tell me a "safe" way of configuring wine?..or at least what I should change in the configuration file?(btw... I heard that you need to disable directsound to use Winamp, but I don't seem to find the option in the file)
Open for suggestions... you can also give me alternates to the programs I just wrote(winamp,GAIM,wine...
Thanks in advance

Go here and scroll down to the "support files" section - about half way down the page. There is a program there called "WineSetupTK", which gives you a nice graphical interface to setup or modify your wine configuration file.

Xmms is a junky program it always does weird things the latest version. If you try to move the sound left or right and move it so the speakers are centered the volume would be low even if you make it louder.

On FC2 XMMS fails to output sound, so the best thing I am using is Real Player 10 beta and its working beautifully on FC2.
