Telnet Fedora Core 3

I need to turn on telnet so I can reach this box via telnet by any other machine. I looked in the /etc/xinetd.d/ folder and couldnt find any telnet file. How do I go about turning it on?

telnet

Do a:
Code:
rpm -qa | grep telnet-server
Do you have a telnet-server package installed? That package should contain /etc/xinetd.d/telnet.

After the file is there, you may enable/disable it by:
Code:
/sbin/chkconfig telnet on
---or---
/sbin/chkconfig telnet off
After you get telnet working perfectly, I will point out that ssh is superior to telnet.

It turned out I didnt have the server RPM installed. I figured it out just before you posted...

I know SSH is better, I use it all the time but I am running some tests that I need telnet for. Its an all internal LAN....

telnet server on Fedora Core 3

Althoug i installed the package telnet-server from the CD, i could not see a "telnet" file in etc/xinetd.d directory. what may be the problem.? when i try to re-install the package, system gives an "already installed" message, but no telnet file is created...

What do you get when you type:
Code:
$ rpm -qa | grep telnet-server
telnet-server-0.17-30
$ rpm -ql telnet-server-0.17-30
Note: The first rpm command will show the exact version numbers of the telnet-server. If yours are different, use those numbers in the second rpm command. Also, the "-ql" in the second rpm command uses the lower case "el" character.
