suddenly unable to play video

A few days ago my system suddenly became unable to play the video track in any video file. the preview miniature is fine, when I open the file I see something like this: http://folk.ntnu.no/gjerp/diverse/snapshot10.jpg

the pattern is almost static, virtually no change as I jump to different parts of the file.

I have not removed anything since before this problem started.

running Kubuntu, latest version

corrupted rastport pointer. I and others have seen it and if you search the site you will find it, though I'll allow that it isn't easy to find unless you know the right terms.

"Solution" is to restart X and try to upgrade your video driver. If you are running beryl or compiz fusion, it could be associated with that. Also seems to be associated with the NVidia driver. You gave no information on your system so I can't be more specific.

Workaround (which does work, for awhile) is to change the display resolution. I normally do that with krandrtray, and I can do it without restarting X. The problem will reoccur, though, in anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, requiring another change in screen resolution to reset things.
