I am running Fedora C2 booting into Gnome. I currently have this: OpenBSD: sshd_config,v 1.59 2002/09/25 11:17:16 markus Exp $ installed.
For reasons to convoluted to go into I want to remove the version I have and install a downloaded rpm from OpenSSH with yum.
I have removed the "client" programs (askpass) through the "Add Remove Programs" GUI.
I tried > yum update openssh-server-3.9p1-1fc2.i386.rpm
which ended with > Cannot find any package matching openssh-server-3.9p1-1fc2.i386.rpm available to be updated.
No actions to take
So I am now at a loss as to what to do. The sshd.config file I have points to /usr/bin but all that is there is files with a little Gnome foot on them. I'm assuming that these are exicutables.
I am reluctant to use the yum install option on the downloaded RPMs lest I create competing or broken versions of the servers.
Yum only works with repositories, not individual files.
If you have to install a specific package then use:
rpm -ivh <package>.
Obligatory warning: Distribution-specific packages are patched and tweaked, and other packages are not drop-in substitutes. Specifically: OpenBSD people don't like PAM, but Fedora Core relies on it, so watch out.
I do feel that I could install a package, but how do I remove the existing package? I don't know where to look for it. Linux is like DOS right? If I can find all the parts of the program I can just delete it? What is the "Program Files" equivalent for Linux? Or should I say Fedora, since it seems that there are many locations that the SSH server could be residing?
I can tell you that the SSH server was installed by default by the Fedora package. I can also tell you that the @#%^@ can't be removed by the GUI applet even though it was installed by the OS. It is not even listed.
Currently I'm trying to get the thing up an running via Penquinet on XP. I think I have the keys working, but while I can get a GUI prompt for my username, it will not prompt me for a password and then disconnects. <sigh> I'll be digging into the log files today.
You can remove a single package from your system like this:
rpm -e openssh-server
(you don't need the version number on the end).
Yum is smarter, though:
yum remove openssh-server
The applet is a bit of a @#%^@ - it's only intended for updating existing packages. BTW, the GUI Add/Remove Packages is definitely a @#%^@, and I recommend that you don't use it.
Again, a generic package from OpenSSH is unlikely to just work on Fedora Core without complications, so I'd recommend that you post your SSH problem on the Networking or Securiy forums here, rather than drive yourself into a state of frustration trying to beat your system into submission.
hahahahah! Thank you for the advice! I do believe I will follow it!
I do have Penquinet working after a fashion. I had to modify Password Authentication to yes to get it. They are working on modifying the program to allow interactive logins (or some such - anyway keys only doesn't work right now.)
Now all X programs crash (gedit and such), so I need to check Xforwarding serverside and then Xforwarding Penquinet side. I may not have my port forwarding set properly there.
But I have the command-line so I'm 90% happy!
I'll leave the whole askpass-gnome stuff uninstalled as I don't need clients on my server.
Thank you again and I'll post on the other forum if I've got more questions.
