SSH Hangs (not due to DNS problems!)

Hi,

Whenever I login to my server using SSH protocol (via putty), I immediately get a typical "login as:" prompt. If I enter a valid username, then the system hangs for quite a while (a minute or so) then prompts me for the password.

However, If I enter an invalid username, then there is no delay at all, and the password prompt comes immediately.

In the past, I've experienced lots of hanging due to reverse DNS problems, but this isn't the issue here, as I'm connecting via IP address; DNS isn't involved.

So, what gives? Any ideas?

Thanks a bunch,
David

Can you give anymore information? Has it always done this, have you changed something, who are you trying to log in as?

I am not sure if I can help you because SSH has always worked flawless for me but a little more info might shed some light.

It's always behaved this way; nothing's changed.

I'm not sure what you're getting at with the "who are you trying to log in as?" question, but if you're wondering, this behavior happens when I try to log in with any valid account (anything from /etc/passwd). If I give a bogus name, like iamcrazylksjdf, the system responds immediately and asks for my password. I've always thought that was pretty weird.

I'm not familiar with identd. How does it relate to SSH?

After thinking about it for a bit I think you can get this behavior if you are running tcp wrappers. check your /etc/host.deny file and see if it has any entries. Thats a real long shot but not sure what else it could be.

What ssh client are you using to try use to ssh in to your box?
