Spell check add word in digiKam

Kubuntu 8.10, KDE4, and digiKam 0.9.4. In the digiKam comments area there is a spell check capability. However, there must be a permissions problem of some kind. I can access words in the dictionary to replace misspelled words. There is a button to add a new word to the dictionary, but it does not appear to add the word. It's still labeled as misspelled. This is awkward for names of places and people. I had the same problem under KDE3.5 on Kubuntu 8.04. Has anyone managed to resolve this issue? TIA
