Sound Issues with XMMS/ mpg123 strange (strange noises)

Ever since i updated my distro of linux (suse) to the latest version, i have been having problems with XMMS periodically making strange beeping/chirping noises. i then went to mpg123 and have similar problems with it.. these are the only two players that i have this problem with.
XMMS version is 1.2.10
xmms is using libmpg123 for decoding, and is using alsa
alsa version 1.0.3
mpg123 Version 0.59s-mh4
linux kernel version 2.6.4

it seems that that high processor usage intensifies the problem.

here is as much as i can give you about my computer

amd athlon xp 1700 + oc'd to somethin like 1947 MHz
asus A7N8X-e deluxe
256 meg ram
using the nVidia AC97 sound card
geforce 4 mx 440
some wireless network card with that stupid acx100 chipset.
a couple more network cards
a second sound card (CM8738)

any help would be appreciated.
