Software to cut clips from a DVD

I have never tried this nor even know what to search for. I want to be able to take a clip a section from a DVD and then save it, maybe as an MPEG.

I am using SLES10 and have a Core 2 Quad system, mega ram and hard drive, etc.

avidemux is the only one that comes to mind. I don't know if it can read vob files though. You could rip the movie to mpeg and then cut it with avidemux though.

mencoder (part of MPlayer) is a command line program that can most likely do what you need (check the "-ss" and "-endpos" options in the man page).

Gentoo wiki has a HowTo that acts as a good starting point.
