Hi, Joelle. I'm sorry to hear about the problems with your desktop environment. I hope you manage to revert it to normal. (This is just a guess, but it might be that the software for your desktop bar crashed and hasn't restarted properly. Rebooting your computer might resolve it).
I did something much more stupid than that !

The solution was at follows (it might help someone one day):
- CRT + ALT + T to open a terminal window
- type in: cinnamon-settings
-> this enabled to open the settings window (system parameters)
-> add a dashboard and the start button (menu) came back.

For the rest I will look tomorrow, I had enough for the day.

I thank you for your time.

Joelle

Joelle, this is not an easy study and you have received excellent posts thus far. I've never worked with this program but maybe it is what you are looking for.

https://subtitlecomposer.kde.org/

It has a feature where you have one srt in a language on one side and another srt that you are creating on the other side so you can then work with both of them side by side.

Regarding the VLC/srt recommendation here: if you have several srt files of the same video but in different language, you can put the language code in between the file name and the extension. 'video_filename.en.srt', for example. This way, these srt files will still show up in VLC's menu at the same time. Use this link to find the language codes.

If you want to embed the srt subtitle into a video, I would direct you to HandBrake.

Hello Valeoak, SW64 and others

It kind of works with handbrake but the subtitle all appears at once so the screen is full of subtitles that are not readable, it appears for a while and then it is gone for ever ..... all the subtitles are on top of each other all over the screen.

The name of the SRT file is the same as the name of the video. Since the text is embedded on the video, the name of the subtitle file should not have any impact on the end result. In addition, in handbrake we have to select the video and then select the subtitle file. I will end up with several times the same videos but showing subtitles in different languages (instead of 1 video with several subtitle files).

So why is the subtitle all appearing at once ?

On the SRT file, on each line, the end time is greater than the commencing time.
The finishing time of line A is smaller than the beginning time of line B (I saw something about this on the web and I hope I understood correctly).

The SRT file I have is as follows:

0
00:00:01,620 --> 00:00:10,210
00:00:10,220 --> 00:00:20,210
00:00:20,220 --> 00:00:25,210
00:00:25,220 --> 00:00:30,210
00:00:35,220 --> 00:00:40,210
00:00:40,220 --> 00:00:45,210
00:00:45,220 --> 00:00:55,210
00:00:55,220 --> 00:01:00,210
quel est le profil optimal?
00:01:00,220 --> 00:01:05,210
00:01:06,220 --> 00:01:13,210
00:01:13,220 --> 00:01:19,210
00:01:19,220 --> 00:01:24,210
00:01:25,220 --> 00:01:34,210
00:01:34,220 --> 00:01:46,210

hello hello (no this is not café-René from the TV series)

I have uploaded the file I get from handbrake, this file can be downloaded there:
www.grosfichiers.com/kuhZyjdNK45

You will see that all the subtitles appear for 30 seconds, all at once and then it is gone ... it is not readable because it is all overlapped on top of each other all over the screen.

The SRT file is as follows:

00:00:01,620 --> 00:00:10,210

End time > start time one line A
End time of line A < start time of line B

I think I will know the video by heart, I can't hear that guy anymore !!!

It is strange, sometimes I write a post and I click on "post quick reply" but it does not appear in the thread of replies ... hummm

Hi, Joelle. I think you're getting there!

The issue appears to be with the formatting of your subtitles file: you've not included a numeric counter at the start of each subtitle nor have you included a space to indicate the end of the subtitle.

I think you'll have better luck with:

Quote:
1
00:00:01,620 --> 00:00:10,210

2
00:00:10,220 --> 00:00:20,210

3
00:00:20,220 --> 00:00:25,210

4
00:00:25,220 --> 00:00:30,210

5
00:00:35,220 --> 00:00:40,210

6
00:00:40,220 --> 00:00:45,210

7
00:00:45,220 --> 00:00:55,210

8

Let us know if it works.

Valeoak, question for you (or others)

At the beginning you told me how to write in bold etc, does this work only here in this chat or does it work on other things ?

I am looking for a list of things to write in a TERMINAL window. For example yesterday I needed to open the "settings" (I had lost the dash-board bar at the bottom and LM start/menu button)) so in the terminal I wrote cinnamon-settings, and it worked. What would the most useful, standard, phrases be, to be able to run the pc if I have done something stupid and I am stuck out with only the terminal window at hand ?

Thanks

Joelle

this board uses bb codes, you can see it here: https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest....php?do=bbcode
terminals do not use bb codes, but something else. Usually they have their own preferences/settings dialog.

I'm glad it's worked

Just so you know, it seems like you've created a video with the subtitles embedded as a separate track, rather than an overlay on the video track itself. In VLC they didn't show up automatically, but instead I had to enable them via: Subtitle > Sub Track > Track 1. I am not sure what the support is like for this kind of subtitles on generic video players on mobile phone OSs, for example. Something to consider depending on how and to whom you're distributing the videos.

Re. using the terminal: that's such a big area that I could only recommend some books or videos. You might find these videos on YouTube to be a helpful starting point.

where do I find a proper list for linux mint sarah something / cinnamon ?
Do I understand correct that every linux will not use the same "wording" in a terminal ? How do we know what to do ?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! arg ! scream ! not happy ! B**** !
Thank you for telling me because for me it worked automatically.

I must do it again, because the videos are sent via whatsapp or telegram etc etc etc so the subtitles have to be embedded for ever. pffffffffff .........

Can you tell me if this one is properly embedded or not ?
www.grosfichiers.com/292Mkp5LXac

I thought that embedded meant "we can not chose to have the subtitles on or off, they are always on".
Thanks
