Smart watches and Linux

A'm advised to buy a smart watch to keep record of my activities and sleep and...
But the question is: How to transfer the data to a usable and useful
Linux program.

Any suggestions??

Yes. Read How_To_Ask_a_Question and then give us some useful information. Bluetooth is probable workable to transfer data. What's the watch and capabilities?

As soon as you can answer the question of, "How high is up?", we will be able to answer yours. You have given us ZERO DETAILS, besides "smart watch", and mentioning Linux. We do not know:
  • What kind of smart watch
  • How it connects
  • What you want to do
  • If they have software that runs on Linux
  • If there's an equivalent for LInux
  • What features/things you actually NEED
  • Version/distro of Linux
  • ...etc.
Should we guess??

That is not what you asked; you asked if you could use Linux with a smart watch, and how to transfer data. Now it's, "Can I trust Linux?"

Can you trust your ISP? Can you trust Windows/Mac/Apple? Can you trust your neighbor? What do you think we'll be able to tell you when you're asking a question that's incredibly vague?? Most Linux users will tell you (rightly) that it's MUCH more trustworthy than any other OS. Some won't.

Again: your questions lack any details that would let anyone help you. Read the "How to ask a smart question" guide, as suggested, along with the "Question Guidelines" link.

I trust Linux. That' s why I consider to use Linux for this purpose. But others are telling me there is no interface, there is no serious data collection and re[presentation. That's why I ask the community.

...and that is why we are **AGAIN** telling you that without knowing ANYTHING about your device, computer, version/distro of Linux, that **WE CANNOT ANSWER**

You are not giving us any details. Far different if you say, "I have/am going to buy <SMARTWATCH NAME>, and want to know if anyone has tips on how to connect it to Linux. I've checked their website, but don't see much. I'm using <VERSION OF LINUX>. Can anyone offer advice?"

versus:

"I want to buy a smart watch and may want to use Linux"

Do you see the difference??? Until you actually provide USEFUL INFORMATION, no one can tell you anything.

It depends on the device. There should be user forums for the specific devices. However, some do have GNU/Linux support, it is more complex for some than others. Here is one example: https://github.com/openambitproject/openambit

Ignore the others. Explain your interfacing requirements and stop irritating people. My guess is you don't know your interfacing requirements, in which case the answer is probably.

PineTime ought to be on your shortlist of devices to investigate.

Since you won't provide anything in the way of details or information, thanks. And you must have missed the "Go to shop" button on that website, that has the device with prices.

Again: tell us what smart watch you're looking at/have and what version/distro of Linux and we can at least try to assist. We can't guess.

I don't think he knows the details yet because he hasn't actually bought the watch. I gather he doesn't want to buy and pay for one until he knows which types can interface successfully with Linux. Am I right?

That's what I'm guessing as well, but still...expecting us to research EVERY smart watch to figure out which support Linux best is a bit much. He mentions some data, and wants it to be "usable and useful" (but doesn't actually say WHAT data, or what the desired goal is to define 'usable and useful). Not a lot to go on. No idea if they want to do a DIY solution using a database and web interface, or if they want a native program from the watch manufacturer to work. And we can't tell them that because we don't know the watch(es) they're even wanting.

Be different if they said, "I'm looking at x,y, and z smart-watches", but we don't have that or anything about their Linux system. Could be the watch uses bluetooth, some have USB, etc. Some programs work with WINE, some don't. We just have NOTHING to even start to offer soltuions/suggestions. Like saying "I want to buy a car that runs on electric". Fine....budget? Passenger/cargo needs? Range? Anything??? Can't really guess.
