Question shutting down X server

I have been using mandrake linux 9.0 for awhile now. I can not however figure out how to easily get out of X and to the command prompt. I once used red hat 7.3 and I could just click on the "K" button and then click on a menu option to shutdown X (I use KDE by the way). I can not figure out how to shut it down using mandrake 9.0. I sometimes need to install a display driver or something that requires X to be off and have to reboot in failsafe to get to a prompt. I know that an easier way must exist.

Thanks,
Noah

If you are in X then hit Ctrl+Alt+F2 this should bring up a console log in as root and then at the prompt type init 3 this should shut down X and then to go back into X after wards init 5.

This is how it works for Red Hat. To be sure on the different runlevels check /etc/inittab this should let you know which run levels to use.
