Should I update my X server?

Hi there,

Recently I have been experiancing some opengl problems. For instance, glut is giving problems.
To test glut, a few source files are given so you can see if apps requiring glut compile and run well. There are some 32 tests. All test's compile and most run well. But there are some that fail to run. An example:

sohail@linux:~/apps/glut-3.7/test/glut$ ./test24
GLUT: Fatal Error in test24: visual with necessary capabilities not found.

But not only glut is giving problems. Some time ago I posted a problem here stating that I had problems with maya. To sum up what I sayed in that post: Maya keeps crashing on me. In a log file called mayaLog if found :

Maya Message Log starting Sunday, March 23, 2003

Error: Unable to get OpenGL visual with these attributes:
RGB, Single buffered
Error: OpenGL is not configured properly !!

But I have no problems with other opengl applications. I'm pretty desprate now. I couden't find anything wrong with my configurations.

I have an nvidia gforce 4 mx card with the latest nvidia drivers. But I have a litlle old xf86 server. Here is the output of
XFree86 -version

sohail@linux:~$ XFree86 -version

This is a pre-release version of XFree86, and is not supported in any
way. Bugs may be reported to XFree86@XFree86.Org and patches submitted
to fixes@XFree86.Org. Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions,
please check the latest version in the XFree86 CVS repository
(http://www.XFree86.Org/cvs)

XFree86 Version 4.1.0.1 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6510)
Release Date: 21 December 2001
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)
Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.17 i686 [ELF]
Module Loader present

as you can see, my x server is of version 4.1. So my question is, is that okey, or should I install a newer version.

Regardes, schatoor

You X re-install will probably require the re-installation of other opengl files, a good system clean out should fix your problems.
