sendmail setup newbie

Afternoon all.

My RH7.3 box is a web server and I need to configure sendmail so that only outgoing email is allowed, and only to emails within a particular domain (@mycompany.com).

I'm not too sure where to start ...

From what I understand I need both mail & sendmail installed because it is actually the mail program that composes the message, which is then passed to sendmail, which then sends the message to the recipient. Is that correct?

My questions are:

1) How do I check if each are installed?
2) Do I need to install anything else?
3) Any good resources/references for configuring sendmail the way I mentioned?

Thanks

you need the sendmail and the sendmail-cf rpm files. the first is for sendmail and the second for configuration of sendmail. the plain "mail" command should already be installed i would think.

make changes to the macro /etc/mail/sendmail.mc (i'm not sure how to restrict access the way you want off the top of my head but i'm sure you can find out how in google!

Once you've got your changes made then back up /etc/mail/sendmail.cf and type:
1) m4 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc > /etc/mail/sendmail.cf
2) service sendmail restart

You might want to try poking through that macro file since it's pretty short (compared to the sendmail config file at least). if you back up the config file before you run m4 on the macro to make a new one at least you'll have something to fall back on while experimenting.

I've been away for a few days and am just getting back to this. My Linux CD only came with sendmail-8.11.6-15.i386.rpm, and no rpm for sendmail -cf do i need to get that elsewhere?

Also, I assume mail is installed because I type mail, and I get a message indicating no mail for current user.

Lastly, I do not believe I have m4 installed (not even sure what that is).... I did rpm -q m4 and I get a message that it is not installed.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Just installed the rpm, and do some modification in file /etc/mail/sendmail.mc. when you finished do this
m4 /etc/mail/sendmail > /etc/sendmail.cf
it will convert the sendmail.mc into sendmail.cf which is configuration file for sendmail.

I had nothing but problems trying to configure sendmail. I was only wanting it to allow mail to be sent to local users only and I never did get it working.

I know you are trying to configure sendmail and maybe I shouldn't throw this in, but I installed postfix and found it very easy to configure. Just a suggestion.
