'startx'

or /etc/init.d/xdm start (or analogically for your distro, if you have xdm installed).

Had you specified what distribution you are running you could get more descriptive instructions..

You should update your profile to reflect that information..

sorry
and thanks for the reply.
I'm running red hat 9.

nonkey: i did try that before asking, but i get not found. Also in the /etc/init.d/ there's no xdm

I'm trying to understand whats wrong with it, but i just can't lounch gui. When i run

$XFree86

i always get a fatal error and can see the problem.

already re-installed X but...

Set your default runlevel to 5 which is default for Redhat 9

Then edit the startup scripts for runlevel 5 to NOT start X automatically

I think you can use the redhat-config-services utility to tell it to not start X.. it's been a LONG time since I have worked on a RH 9 box.. Sorry I can't seem to find anything that tells me the name of the startup script.. but it should be pretty obvious

when you boot the system you will log into a text prompt, after which to run X you would type startx
