Thumbs down RH 7.1 upgrate to kernel 2.4.9 = problem

Wanted to update the kernel on my RH 7.1 installation, but I cant get it running with the new kernel..

What did I do...well

unpacked the dl src..
did a make xconfig and configured the kernel settings.
did a make dep
did a make bzImage
did a make modules
did a make modules_install

Then I copied the kernel image to the /boot directory and changed the setting in lilo.conf to point to the new kernel..
Then I ran /sbin/lilo
Also tried make bzlilo

Then I reboot but it wont work
It gets to a point where it says:

Synchonizing Arb IDs.
...Timer: Vector=49 Pin1=2 Pin2=0

Then it just stops.
I can still use the old kernel if I boot from floppy and change the lilo back..

Any1?

did you copy the new system map to /boot?
if not, its in the root kernel source directory after you compile.. it is 'System.map', just copy it to /boot.. thats the only thing i can think of..

Angry

For crying out CRAP!!
It's just not gonna happen. It's a waste of my time...

So untill I'm starting getting paid for doing this work I'm not gonna read any more HOW-TOs and other half-ass documentation..

Thx for the suggestion anywayz, but as you might have guessed it didn't work

I'm just gonna sit back and relax now for a bit

I just tried updating my 242 kernel to 249 with buildkernel. And IT didn't work but for different reasons than you gave. It says I got too many symbolic links. I don't know what that means or how to fix it, but I'm on my way to find out. But it might work in your situation. It's at rpmfind.net, I think.
Supposed to be way easy. Just give it one command and away we go.
