My question involves my pc at work. I have a computer that was inherited from a previous employee. It looks like Karmic was installed incorrectly or is corrupted in some way. The OS is now at version 10.10 and I believe the kernel has updated properly. Synaptic throws this error when I try to reload the packages:

The issue is that I would really like to be able to update firefox and thunderbird. This is an IT business and security is essential so I like to use the latest stable apps.
Is there a fix that does not include reloading Ubuntu 10.10?
