404 not found?

I have been trying to download the latest version of Skype but keep getting a 404 not found error message. Could some one tell me where i have gone wrong please!

Opened a konsole and typed my root password then hit enter.
I then typed wget http://download.skype.com/linux/skyp...-1mdk.i586.rpm

Really appreciate any and all help. Big thanks

i don't really understand your question... there's nothing you can do about a 404, it's not your fault.

probably better not to do it as root, either. not sure if there's any specific security risk, but it's not necessary so why do it.

I am not sure if this is one you can get with wget. I tried the link in a WEB browser, and got the 404 error, then redirected to the skype download page. I selected the Mandriva link and started the download from this URI:
Code:
http://download.skype.com/linux/skype-1.4.0.74-static.tar.bz2
Looks as if you may have received the 404 error because you had the rpm package name incorrect. You reported this one in your post:
Code:
http://download.skype.com/linux/skype-1.4.0.74-1mdk.i586.rpm
I understand that you may want an rpm file, but the Mandriva link on their site returned the link I report here.

HTH,

of course you can get it with wget. just right click on the link and copy it, then paste it into a terminal. the link i provided, or the one you posted with static.tar.bz2, downloads the file.

Slackhack,

I stand corrected. I tried your link using wget, and of course it worked. I do not normally use wget here and I presumed it to be much like an ftp client, but it appears to be much more. I'll have to work with it further. Thank You .
