Removing graphics from a PDF, preserving everything else

Does anyone know how can I remove graphics and images from a PDF while preserving the text, layout, internal bookmarks, and so on?

I have a number of graphics-heavy ebooks which include graphical page backgrounds and copious illustrations. They look very pretty, but are slow to load, especially on my tablet.

I'd like to remove all the image-file-base graphics so that I have smaller and faster PDFs.

I've found tools that extract the images to additional files, such as pdfimages, but that's just about the opposite of what I want.

You can use pdfedit to manually remove them or consider writing a script.

The other way would be to extract/split the pages the text with pdftk and reformat with say txt2tags if necessary

Thanks for the suggestions. However, pdfedit isn't available on my Ubuntu 13.04 and I'd prefer not to install Qt3 to get it running. Splitting the PDF into separate pages would lose me the bookmark/content structure, which is something I'd like to avoid.
