Redhat booting problems

I had a redhat 9.0 system that was working just fine. One day when I started it , the screen just hanged midway.

It showed that the linux boot image was loaded, then came to the point where it said "system starting , press I for an interactive setup". After this it started some of the services, the last being "configuring kernel setup [OK]". The system hanged at this point.

I have reinstalled the OS, changed the hard drive but the problem still persists.

Any ideas about solving this problem?

Anything hooked to your USB ports? That can hang you up.

Try booting into your installed system using Redhats installation disk. Does that work?

Otherwise, give us some details as to which partition you have linux installed. and your grub and/or lilo configurations.

Hi

It seems it would be something to do with the hardware or maybe the clock.

After trying several times, it has now come to where they show the login screen (I am in text mode). It was getting stuck where they check the clock, there it shows an error right now.

Now there is a problem with the login, if I type the correct ID and password(as root, which is the only user) , I just get the login screen back again. An incorrect login is being rejected.

As for the installation, it is dual boot, linux is on extended dos partition. The root is in /dev/hda7(ext3 ), swap on /dev/hda6
I am using grub as the loader.
Windows is on /dev/hda1 (primary dos fat32)and a different version of windows on /dev/hda5(extended dos fat32).
When I partitioned it seems it is taking /dev/hda5 as the second partition and then /dev/hda6 onwards.
I am a newbie when it comes to hardware.

Could you tell me
