raising the volume on a ripped music track

If I rip a track with intent to burn it to a disc, is there any software that can increase the volume before I burn it? I am thinking mainly of classical music tracks, which are often quiet enough that one strains to hear them at a CD player/stereo/device's normal volume.

If you use your favourite searchengine to look for "Linux +audio +normalization" and check Freshmeat.net and Sourceforge.net for "normalization" you should be able to find some software.

Audacity?
It can perform amplification, equalization, normalization.
But you should take into account, that classical music tracks often has a very large differencies in volume level, and by amplification and normalization you will decrease the quality.
