PyQt installation problem

This is one of those weird problems that can probably only be answered by someone who's been in the same situation.

I tried to install PyQt. I made sure I had the correct versions of python and SIP, and then went through the usual routine of configure, make, and make install. There were no complaints, and all appeared to be well.

Then, when I tried to run a program that uses PyQt, it immediately complained that PyQt4.QtCore was missing. So it was; together with everything else, except pyqtconfig.py, pyqtconfig.pyc, and pyqtconfig.pyo!

Can anyone suggest what I do next, other than abandon the program that wants PyQt?

Without any information about the 'program' and versions
of sip and PyQt4 it will only be a hint ..

An interesting hint, nevertheless: thank you. I think I shall wait until my next distro upgrade and start over from scratch.
