Proxy all traffic through proxy

Hey all
I have a web application (node) running on port x. I have a local proxy running on port y (for managing network speed and so on). I want all my traffic (in and outgoing traffic) to run through my proxy, so if you access the server from the outside, the requests will go through the proxy and proceed to the web server - also traffic from the server to the outside should go through this proxy. My application runs in a docker container.
By setting http_proxy I somehow get the behaviour I want, but thats only effective if the tools you are using uses this variable.

a better explanation would be nice here.
You cannot force any application to use that proxy, in general you need to configure them one by one.
Some of them may honor the variable http_proxy (lower case), others will recognize HTTP_PROXY (upper case), a few may try to use something else like their own config files - and probably some cannot be set at all.

You could put the proxy on the firewall.

Solution

Hey

Thanks for your replies. I solved my problem by using wondershaper (which can be installed using apt) and tc for managing the latency.
