proftpd authentication problems
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but Ive done everything I can think of and tried everything Ive read on the subject.
Info: I am running Mandrake 8.2 and PROftpd (2.3.1 I think is the version, although Im not sure - whichever is default in MDK 8.2) with Apache as a web server.
Problem: I am only able to connect to PROftpd from a single, static account (fname1 - it was the user I was logged in as when I set up everything).
Background: I have several other users on the box, but none of them are allowed to connect via FTP (even root is denied). I have tried AuthUserFile and anonymous users, and neither work.
Question: I don't understand why the other users on the system (including root) are denied access to the ftp server while fname1 isn't. I need to allow other users FTP access without letting them all use fname1 as their login. Why can't the other users connect to FTP and how can I correct this?
I am very new to *nix systems and trying to set this box up as my web server as I mentioned. Any help would be greatly appreciated (if I left out any info that might be important, let me know)...
Secondarily, I noticed fname1 is not allowed FTP write access to /var/www/html (or anywhere else for that matter). I need to give all users full permissions in FTP to that directory...
Thanks
