proftpd & sshd - good dl / poor ul

When I upload to my Linux machine I get great speed, near 100% utilization, but when I download from it I get terrible speeds (10% util.) and a lot of time-outs. It happens with proftpd in standalone mode and sshd.

Anyone ever hear of anything like this?

Man I hope it's not the cable, I have a 100ft'er and it's my only one.

If your on a cable modem, usually those and most ISP's for that matter cap off the upload speeds.

So when your downloading from your server, its actually using its upstream bandwidth which is significantly lower than your download. Most cable companies do no limits on the download to your pc though.

Check with your ISP to find the upstream limits.. they'll probably tell you its the usual 128Kbps.... but that's always just the max.

Ah, thanks for the reply, but I should have been more clear. This is all over a local network. There is a huge disparity between sending to a machine (10MB/sec) and receiving from a machine (1MB - 100KB/sec, with frequent timeouts) and I don't know what would be causing it. SSH sessions seem flawless over this same connection.

I've heard of some other having the same problem with SAMBA performance.

Any ideas?
