Problems with USB - Elementary OS

Hi everybody,
I have been unable to boot into this OS (Elementary) with a Live USB despite my best efforts. I have downloaded the .iso (a couple of times) verified it but when I go to boot from it I get a message something like "cannot find a live file system"- on the memory stick I am assuming. I have tried it on two different model Dell laptops and another ACER laptop without luck. I have also tried making the memory stick with both "Start up disc creator" and "Balena" on my linux devices. I have yet to try "Rufus" but will.

I can get the iso to boot ok in VM Oracle but can't get it to play when I try live and then maybe install.

Can anybody tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks
B

Thank you if you read this, but I seemed to have fixed the issue which raises another question for me.

I etched the iso onto a memory stick using Rufus in windows 10 which is a less than ideal solution for someone looking to leave windows behind. Rufus gave me an initial warning that it had to download a couple of extra files to make it work, which it did. Now I can use the usb for live or install.

As I said in my post, I used both "Start up disc creator" that comes native with Ubuntu and then Balena that I have installed. The question I have now and one that I have attempted to try and figure for myself prior to this....is there a program for Ubuntu, or other Linux distros that does what Rufus does for windows? If someone thinks that UNetbootin does, it won't run at all on Ubuntu 18.04 so that is not an option.

If someone does know of something that is a Rufus equivalent I'd love to know what it is!

Thanks for reading.

try this one http://multibootusb.org/
using dd in a terminal is another way. There are many howto's on the web for using dd command.

@ the red poppet:-

I use UNetbootin in 32-bit Bionic. Runs quite happily, and I've always found it to work well with the Debian/Ubuntu-based distributions.

You'll need to install the mtools package from the repos. You may also find it helpful to employ what for want of a better description I call a 'forced start'.

UNetbootin doesn't always seem to see your flash drive. Assuming you know what your flashdrive's mount point is (mine is invariably sdh), start UNetbootin via this (using your equivalent) in the terminal:-

Code:
unetbootin installtype=USB targetdrive=/dev/sdx1
.....where 'sdx1' is your flash drive.

Works for me, anyway. See if it does for you.

Just out of curiosity, what (if any) readout d'you get in the terminal when trying to start it with the above command? Could give some clues....

Mike.
