Angry problems with trying to get 3d running on suse 10.2

Hi,

Been trying to get 3d running on suse 10.2 on kernel 2.6.

these are the steps i took.
downloaded the rpm files from ati site. the amd64 version,
opened it and compiled it no problems. something came up when i tried to install the drivers. there were 4 error lines that came up that said it couldn't write to the kernel. i followed the suse 10.2 site for installation of ati drivers amd64 instructions but came up without the 3d result. and now all i am left with is the max monitor resolution of 1152x864 which used to be at 1440x900 for a widescreen. not a critical problem as the display still works just that everything is BIG!

so i followed the troubleshooting instructions and removed the drivers and ... and reinstalled the drivers. when i did the install i was running in runlevel 3 and trooubleshoot also runlevel 3 now i've no idea how to copy from console but the errors i saw were that it couldn't be written to kernel. what is the problem of not being able to write to kernel? I'm a newbie, and my best guess will be that it doesn't matter how i troubleshoot it because the problem seems to lie with not being able to write to kernel. please help.

there was also this strange command
# rpm -e $(rpm -qa | grep fglrx)
>
> this is the result and i cannot do anything
>

can someone explain to me what happened when i tried this command? it was supposed to remove the previous drivers but it just didn't respond after it was issued. which directory should i have been in?

thanks. Ted.

The command 'rpm -e $(rpm -qa | grep fglrx)' removed (ereased) the fglrx rpm package if it was installed. It does not matter which directory you were in when you typed this command. Did the command prompt return (sometimes this takes a few moments)?

Many times one can do something like this to get the screen messages for later use;

somecommand > output.txt

And you cannot post the exact commands you used with some details of the errors????

Examples:

I typed: sudo rpm -Uvh thunderbird*.rpm and got an error that said that the rpm is already installed.

I typed: rpm -Uvh thunderbird*.rpm and got an error which can't create transaction lock.

The errors 'is already installed' and 'can't create transaction lock' while not 100% accurate is enough to at least provide a clue or two.

the thing is when i run sax2 from this point, it doesn't give me the resolution of 1440x900 but only allows a max res of 1280x600 which is what i don't get. this time when i ran the driver it without running sax2 i get the 1440x900 resolution on my monitor.

before i ran these commands i removed the earlier drivers with
rpm -e $(rpm -qa | grep fglrx)

so I am guessing that its got something I am not doing regarding setting up the kernel. prior steps were building the package. commands are
# su
password
# cd /usr/src/linux
# make mrproper
# make cloneconfig
# make modules_prepare
# make clean

# rpm -e $(rpm -qa | grep fglrx)

# sh ati*.run --buildpkg SuSE/SUSE102-AMD64

thanks for the assistance. sorry I am a little late in responding. was at a location away from this computer where linux is installed on.

So it seems that you do not have the kernel source installed or you do not have a symlink to it as specified (needed);

make : Entering directory '/usr/src/linux_2.6.18.2-34-obj/x86_64/default'
make : *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
make leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-2.6.18.2-34-obj/x86_64//default

Does this directory ( /usr/src/linux-2.6.18.2-34-obj/ ) exist???

yes it does. there is a file in it called module.symvers
checked that kernel source was installed before starting the installation. used yast to check. ver 2.6.18.8-0.1

Kernel-source is different to "kernel". Download with Yast aprox. 250 MB. Drivers need it to write to the kernel proper.

hmm this is what i gather. What I am missing is something to write to the kernel and this program is called kernel-source.

I checked on yast, under software managemenht. there is a check on kernel-source. and the version is ver 2.6.18.8-0.1 (as above) and the size of this program is 221.6MB. so that would mean the kernel source has been present.

Am i right to say that the kernel-source is a program that writes to the kernel. now unless I am missing a kernel to write to... ??? is that possible? wouldn't the kernel be a universal command program that tells what the OS is supposed and there is only one kernel.

There is a "kernel", which is the heart of your system, and there is the "kernel-source", which as the name indicates is the source code for your kernel. The video driver needs the "kernel-source" to "write" or "connect" to your kernel proper. At that point you have a working driver. But there are a lot of other thing that can go wrong. First make sure of hardware compatibility. Here is a list you might want to look at to start:

# This file contains information about video cards that have been
# tested with Xgl.
#
# Each line has a one-character status code, followed by a regular
# expression that is matched against the card's PCI IDs in the form:
#
# VENDOREVICE[:REV][:SUBVENDOR:SUBDEVICE]
#
# The match is not anchored at the end, so, eg, putting just a
# vendor and device will match any revision, subvendor, and
# subdevice of that card.
#
# The status code is one of:
#
# G ("Good"): The card is known to work with Xgl.
#
# B ("Bad"): The card does not work with Xgl.
#
# S ("Slow"): The card sort of works with Xgl, but we don't
# recommend you use it. (It is either too slow,
# or slightly buggy.)
#
# U ("Unknown"): The card wasn't recognized, but the vendor
# was, in which case the suggested packages and
# setup script may still be useful.
#
# There are also variables, which specify things about the cards that
# follow them:
#
# DRIVER indicates the X driver to be used. (This is so that we don't
# get tricked into using a driver with only software support for 3D.)
#
# PACKAGES indicates the proprietary driver packages needed for the
# following cards. Package names ending in "-kmp" will have the
# right kernel type (default, smp, etc) appended automatically
#
# SETUP is the full path to a script that can test or set card-specific
# options in xorg.conf
#
# XGL_OPTS indicates Xgl server options for the following cards.
#
# The long list of Unknown ATI and NVIDIA cards comes from the list of
# cards known to be supported by the drivers.

Sorry you have to get a new card, but since you are at it, NVidia is a better bet than ATI. The drivers work better with Suse 10.2 at least.
