Problems with Streaming WMV and Audio Settings in Ubuntu Breezy
I just installed Ubuntu Breezy yesterday and am amazed at what it could do. In the past, Linux never worked for me - my Audigy LS sound card never worked, I could never get software to install right, etc. Now I've got sound, and can't believe how much free software is available and how easy it is to get.
But anyway, I've installed totem-xine including the w32 codecs. I can play wmv files fine directly through xine, but streaming video doesn't work right. It may play for 1 second and then pause and the play button and seek bar goes gray, or it may play for a few seconds, the sound will go away for a seocnd, then the same thing happens where the play button and seek bar go grey. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Also, I've got SPDIF output enabled on my Audigy LS. My Logitech Z-5500 speakers are reporting the signal as a 2 channel 48khz signal. I want to know how to enable 2 channel 96khz like I had setup in windows.
The first thing I would check is whether you have the bandwidth for playing back the stream in any decent way. The way I'd test this is to find a fairly slow stream (that is, low bit-per-time ratio) and see if it has the same problem.
The second thing would be--if they're streamed over the mms protocol--is to have a look at the software which helps this. Basically, do `apt-cache search mms | grep mms | grep -v xmms'. If Ubuntu has mimms, try downloading the file and playing it. Do you still have the problem?
mike@bedroom:~$ apt-cache search mms | grep mms | grep -v xmms
libmms-dev - MMS stream protocol library - development files
libmms0 - MMS stream protocol library - development files
emms - The Emacs MultiMedia System
gkrellmms - GKrellM XMMS Plugin
gstreamer0.8-mms - mms plugin for GStreamer
imms - Unobtrusive, automatic, and learning XMMS playlist manager
mimms - MMS (mms://) streaming media download utility
lmms - Linux Multimedia Studio
lmms-common - Linux Multimedia Studio - common files
Yes, I have plenty of bandwith. I'm running on a 1.5MB DSL connection and the video I'm trying to watch is 300k. If I reboot into windows it plays perfectly fine.
Also, if I right click and save the file, I can play the saved file - just not streaming video plays.
One other thing I noticed is that using the flash plugin in Firefox does not provide sound.
