Problems restoring gnome desktop to original default

Hi all,

I screwed up my desktop, and had to reset it to original default.

I deleted the .gconf* and .gnome* directories (from console session), rebooted, and the desktop is now back to original.

However, when I login, the screen stays blank for several minutes, then gnome loads, then gives this error message:

Error:
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you login.

I've rebooted several times, still no luck. What else do I need to do to get my gnome back to normal?

Thanks for reading,

Daryl

Lol well if you can't get any farther:

Rename your home directory to .old or something and recreate it moving files from .old dir
or
Make another user and move over your documents

Maybe you need to delete some other directories, like .metacity or .local for example. I'm not sure if Gnome uses .local or not...
