Problems installing Nicotine

Hey there,
I'm not certain how many people use Nicotine, a feature complete SoulSeek client for Linux, but I am having a lot of problems installing it.

I have thoroughly read the README and INSTALL files, and googled extensively for an answer, but I can't seem to find any help. I have all the required dependencies for the software. Here's the problem:

The INSTALL file instructs me to run the command
Code:
python setup.py install --prefix=/whatever/directory/i/want
When I run that command from the source tree as instructed, the installer begins and it seems to run as normally expected. Then the following error is returned:

Code:
[dsmurf@binaural dsmurf]$ cd downloads/nicotine-1.0.8rc1
[dsmurf@binaural nicotine-1.0.8rc1]$ python setup.py install --prefix=/usr/local
running install
running build
running build_py
running build_scripts
running install_lib
creating /usr/local/lib/python2.3/site-packages/pynicotine
error: could not create '/usr/local/lib/python2.3/site-packages/pynicotine': Permission denied
[dsmurf@binaural nicotine-1.0.8rc1]$
The "permission denied" lead me to think that I had to be logged in as root to solve the problem. So su'ed and ran the command again. This time I got an even stranger message:
Code:
[root@binaural nicotine-1.0.8rc1]# python setup.py install --prefix=/usr/local/
running install
error: invalid Python installation: unable to open /usr/lib/python2.3/config/Makefile (No such file or directory)
[root@binaural nicotine-1.0.8rc1]#
[root@binaural nicotine-1.0.8rc1]#
I don't know I can get past the "running install" phase when logged in as myself, but not when logged in as root. I just don't understand what is going on here.

I am pretty stumped on what to do here. If any one has any sort of experience with Nicotine at all...i would really appreciate the help. Thanks in advance.

Making sure PyGTK was installed fixed this for me.
