Problems installing Nicotine

If anyone uses the p2p broswer called Nicotine ( i cant print the URL because this is only my second post), i was wondering if they had the same problem installing the software as i am encountering. After downloading the source, and trying to use python to install it, using the command given to me in the README file, python returns the following error message to me:

[drxsmurf@************* drxsmurf]$ su
[root@************* drxsmurf]# cd /usr/src
[root@************* src]# dir
atk-1.2.4.tar.gz gtk+-2.2.4.tar.gz pygtk-2.0.0.tar.gz
glib-2.2.3 nicotine- RPM
glib-2.2.3.tar.gz nicotine- wine-20030911
gtk+-2.2.4 pango-1.2.5.tar.gz Wine-20030911.tar.gz
[root@************* src]# cd nicotine-
[root@************* nicotine-]# dir
CHANGELOG INSTALL nicotine-import-winconfig
debian languages pynicotine TRANSLATORS MAINTAINERS README
files MANIFEST README.import-winconfig
img nicotine setup.cfg
[root@************* nicotine-]# python install --prefix=</usr>
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'

I am very new to Linux and python. I know for a fact that my mandrake install comes with all the necessary lib that i need to run this app (doesnt it?)

If anyone can help, that'd be great.

maybe you dont have wxgtk and so on have a look at the nicotine depends on the nicotine page and maybe it would usefull if you coul paste the message you get, when you try to run nicotine right from source using the ./nicotine command or the python nicotine

i wanna install nicotine too.
but i'm not yet that far. i'm stuck with installing pygtk. well actually i'm stuck with downloading it, because it always says that the file doesn't exist when i wanna download it.
i got some cvs version by typing something like "cvs -z3 checkout pygtk" (inspired from an introduction to cvs) but in the new pygtk directory there's no configure, even if the readme says to install it by ./configure...

by searching this forum i saw that i seem to be the first one not even succeeding to get pygtk :-/

anyway. i wonder if the ./nicotine suggestion from kasperhans helped you & if you didn't have any problems with pygtk?

In short...Nicotine is a dependency nightmare. it might be easier to install wine and run the win32 SoulSeek client. I have had alot of problems installin the PyGTK libraries. It has alot of dependencies that are really tricky for a newb like us to install on the first try.

Dont give a world without fences, why do we need Windows and Gates?
