Problems Installing Libraries from Source

Aloha,

Hey everyone, I'm having a reoccuring problem and I'm completely puzzled as to what it may be or how to fix it. The issue is that, for some reason, I cannot successfully install any kind of library from source. While configure, make and make install with the library source work just fine, trying to build anything that depends on those libraries utterly fails, giving errors like:
----
checking for glib-2.0 >= 2.1.4 atk >= 1.0.1 pango >= 1.0.1... Package atk was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `atk.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'atk' found

configure: error: Library requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.1.4 atk >= 1.0.1 pango >= 1.0.1) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.
---
Even though I just bloody built and installed atk 1.2.4. I ran pkg.config on the appropriate atk.pc, but is still gives the same error.

I've got a stock Mandrake 9.2 system, I'm a computer science student and I'm pretty decent with Linux (this is the first major problem I've had so far). I know it's probably something really simple, but I've got no idea what it is. I couldn't find the magical combination of phrases to have Google find a solution for me either, so I've come here looking for help. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

Try to run "ldconfig" and see if that helps.

Allen is right. After you install a new library, you'll want to run /sbin/ldconfig as root. Then you should be able to compile whatever program(s) depend on that library.

Enjoy!

Aloha,

Yup, I tried running ldconfig (no options) as root from / and it still didn't fix the problem. However, I was able to find a related article about someone having a similiar problem with a different library-type source here:

http://freshmeat.net/projects/gphoto/

(in Comments under "Installation Prob")

With this, I should be able to fix the problem. It appears that PKG_CONFIG_PATH isn't pointing to the dirs where the new libraries are. Any idea why that might be? Is there a "normal" place to for lib files like that to live, where PKG_CONFIG_PATH searches by default? Just curious, the actual problem should be resolved now.

Thanks for the helping, it got me thinking about the solution that worked for me.
