I had a major glitch on my desktop system that caused me to decide to redo my user account from scratch (restoring most data from backups).
Resetting up Thunderbird has been a major frustration. The IMAP server is on the LAN at 192.168.13.3 and has the (anonymized) host name "mail.homedomain.net". Mail from the outside world is directed at the firewall to the email server (port 25). This has worked fine for, frankly, years.
Now... attempts to setup an email user account on the IMAP box fail. Previously, I was not using any advanced user authentication as I didn't even want the IMAP system to be accessible to the Internet. I want to set that up again but Thunderbird squawks when I try. Automatic configuration is filling in the server names as ".homedomain.org" based on my email address. Previously, replacing that with the 192.168.13.3 address worked just fine. Not any more. Substituting ".net" for ".org" and prefixing each with "mail" hasn't worked either. I'm not a stickler for mail security the way I had things configured before since you'd have to be in my home office to get at it. Looks like that's not an option any more. If I go to the "Advanced config" option, I get an account that continually pops up a dialog box repeatedly (sometimes often enough that I can't kill it and have to "pkill -15" Thunderbird.)
Login to server 192.168.13.3 with username rnturner failed.

Manually logging into the mail server works just fine so I'm confused about why the logins are failing.
Has anyone got any tips how to get T-bird configured?
BTW, I tried setting up Kmail and Claws-mail and get the same run-around.
It seems there's One True Way to get these two pieces of software to play nice but I've yet to stumble upon it.
What's installed:
On the server:
Courier IMAP V5.2.11
Courier-authlib V0.72.4
On the desktop:
Thunderbird V140.1.0esr (64-bit)
Would any other information help?
I'm certainly open to SSL/TLS or STARTTLS if that can be made to work and also prevent exposure to the wider Internet.
Thanks in advance.
UPDATE: Groups permissions were different on the email server. Mail seems to be working now.
