i use the following way to install vlc in cent os but i got the following error
[root@localhost ~]# yum -y install vlc
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
* addons: ftp.cuhk.edu.hk
* base: ftp.cuhk.edu.hk
* extras: ftp.cuhk.edu.hk
* updates: ftp.cuhk.edu.hk
Setting up Install Process
No package vlc available.
Nothing to do
[root@localhost ~]#

again i got these error:

well that says that there is no precompiled package for it in the repo's, but here i come to the rescue using my handy dandy google fingers to find the answer in 2 seconds flat http://sabarish4u.wordpress.com/2008...centos-system/

You also need to tell us what version of Centos you are running, both 4.8 and 5.4 are current.
Tell us what repos you are using:
There are several el5 repos that have vlc. Here is the one I am using:
