Hi, I recently upgraded to KDE 3.3 and also ran an update via YAST. I am running Suse Linux 9.1 dual booting with Windows XP Pro.
My UPS system threw a wobbly, and I think that the resulting corruption mucked up grub.....
Now I get just the >Grub command line and the machine hangs! I recoevered my Windows boot by recovering the MBR, but cannot get into Linux. If I try to Repair the Grub loader I get the following info:-
" -- checking Versions...
Package Versions are OK:
Grub current version: 0.94-25 Required version: 0.92-69"
I have tried to uninstall grub, reboot and then reinstall frm the DVD, but it installs the same version. I can boot into linux, but have no network and/or some functions of the kernal.....
What can I do to save another complet reinstall of Linux?
2 things spring to mind (1) have you considered using a journalised file system like reiserfs so if power failure you get to lose only a tiny amount of data ?
(2) If you can boot into linux tell me if you have /boot/vmlinuz and its size
and /boot/initrd (ending in gz or image or something ) and a non-zero size.
3) I could go into more details if it were only grub but I don't want to waste eachothers time if the solution is for you to do what you dread.
4) looking ahead, apart from backups I recommend you use a cd that has partimage on it to save your partition images. It takes me about 5 minutes to restore 1.3G of data....my needs are small due to dial up.
