Question Problem getting DRI & 3D to work

I know, I know. This question has been asked maybe a hundred times, but every post i look at in relation to this subject just doesnt seem to have a decisive answer

Im trying to get the official ATI drivers working (ver 2.9.8), and im having some trouble. Ive posted my XF86Config file which shows that the drivers are working to an extent (DRI & 3D become enabled successfully), but then my screen just goes blank and my monitor goes into power saving mode.

(Note: I cut out a couple of sections, specifically the sections that show memory ranges .etc I just wanted to post the important parts specifically those that show whats going on.)

As you can see from the XF86 log DRI and 3D accel become enabled, but as X tries to load up all i get is a blank screen with my monitor going into power saving mode.

....But, there is one specific section of the log that worries me:

(II) fglrx(0): Primary head:
Monitor -- NONE
Connector -- DVI-I
DAC Type -- TVDAC/ExtDAC
TMDS Type -- Internal
DDC Type -- DVI_DDC
(II) fglrx(0): Secondary head:
Monitor -- CRT
Connector -- VGA
DAC Type -- Primary
TMDS Type -- NONE
DDC Type -- VGA_DDC

This says that there is no monitor on the primary head, which im assuming is the VGA connector, but there is a monitor on the secondary head, which im assuming is my cards DVI connector. Im not sure if this is the problem or not, im not sure.

Id appreciate any help / suggestions on how to get the ATI drivers working.

cheers

could this be a problem with sync frequencies being out of range?

Well I use the same sync frequencies for my default XF86Config file and they seem to work fine, but ill give the idea a try anyway either tonight or tomorrow.

You haven't posted your XF86Config file, you posted your log, which is very relevant but posting the config file could help too if you also supply info of what you have hooked up to the card.

You could also try to plug something into the VGA conn. and try different setups, VGA only, VGA-DVI, and see how it reacts, iirc, even the old radeon M$ drivers had issues in certain configuration ...or was it with tvout thrown into the mix ???

Anyhow, just a wild guess, I never used the DVI connector on my 8500, but maybe it needs to be setup as Head2 even if you don't have a Head1 ...or something like that.

Sidenote, 2.9.12 are out as of yesterday, probably won't solve your problem but they seem to have solved a couple small issues I had with 2.9.8. [...memory management and lockups in ut2]

whoops, what was i thinking. I posted it yesterday morning so i probably wasnt fully awake
I blame it on the fact that i have to use M$ software everyday at college which harms my productivity and just gets me plain stressed out

Ill post my XF86Config later on, when i get home

The only thing i did to this file was add the keyboard input device, and the sync frequencies are exactly the same as the ones i used for the ATI config file. I have had no problems using this XF86Config file at all.

Id better mention the fact that im using the ATI FireGL 2.9.8 drivers from the Schneider Digital site, which says that the drivers support XFree86 4.3.0 and should work with the Radeon 8/9000 series of cards.

Any thoughts ?

You mean you actually had the above mentionned log written, trying to load the fglrx driver using this config file??? ...nanhhh!

Maybe you think you're using this config file but you're not, the log is consistant with Ati's driver, but this config file isn't consistant with the log.
For one thing the config loads [...or tries to] the radeon driver, that's a XFree config file.
I'm pretty sure [...according to the log] you ran #fglrxconfig, as instructed, to create the right config file, but this is not it.

Also your BusID might be wrong, [...again, according to the log], as the FireGL driver probably deals with the DVI connector as secondary device only while your XFree [...this config] may have dealt with single monitor setup as primary device, no matter where it's hooked up.
...but I'm speculating, having no experience with the DVI conn.

Jesus H christ, what the hell am i doing!! Ok, i just wanna apologise for being extremely inconsistant and messed up. Seriously, i dont know what they hell is going on with myself.

Alright...Im just gonna take a minute to think about what im doing before i react.

*a minute ticks by*

Your right. Sorry ive just been a little confused these past few days, and ive posted the wrong XF86Config file. This is the one im currently using (thats not providing 3D), and instead i should have posted the ATI config file (which, strangely, is sitting right the other XF86Config file).
If i had tried to use the XF86Config file i posted i wouldnt be getting anywhere

Here is the correct ATI config file (i cut out the stuff about the 'other' input devices to save space):

I just noticed that all the Modelines are commented out in the ATI config file, while in my plain XF86Config i have modelines detailing resolutions, timings .etc
Could it be that there are no modelines available for a screen resolution to be set ? If so, would adding Modelines help?

cheers (sorry 'bout the blunder)

My last suggestion [...speculation] still holds. If I were you I'd try BusID "PCI:1:0:1", which should be your secondary device.

Modelines could be the problem but I'm sorry I can't offer much help, maybe if you supply info on what exactly is hooked up to your card, someone could...
