I have two systems, Mandirva 2006 with cups installed and a local printer, a Lexmark 4039 10R. Local printing works. I used the web admin tool to configure the printer.
I have another linux machine, running MDK 9.2. Cups is installed on it also. I have used the web admin tool to try and get printing to work to the 2k6 machine.
I think my problem is I don't have the device URI set up correltly. I have tried ipp://sluggy:631/ipp/ That doesn't send the jobs over to the 2k6 box. The job stays on the 9.2 machine.
I can contact the web admin tool from 9.2, so I know the 2k6 box is listening to port 631. I also scanned the cupsd.conf file to confirm it is listening to 631.
The 2k6 box is named sluggy. The printer is named 4039. What is the correct syntax to get this thing going? I have been unable to find any working examples. Thanks in advance.

The device URI that I used on my network is ipp://iball:631/printers/Printer, where Printer is the name of the Printer
Also, make sure that in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf on the print server, you have the line "Listen *:631". Make sure that Browsing is set to "on" on the client.
Thank-you for your response. I set things up as you suggested. It is now ipp:sluggy:631/printers/4039 and it works. My server name is sluggy, and the printer is named 4039.
I had checked to make sure it was listening; listen *:631 and the client was browsing.
