Printing from Linux to HP OfficeJet 5500 on XP Pro via CUPS

I had a difficult time configuring existing Linux workstations on my home network to a new HP OfficeJet 5500 running on an XP Pro box. I didn't find a comprehensive set of steps on the forums, so thought I'd document my path to success. I do not intend for anyone to use these steps without reading and referring to the fine docs that are part of the distributions for CUPS, HPIJS, or Samba.

Hope this is helpful.

My machines are RH Linux v8 kernel 2.4.18-14 running on frankenboxes -- one a P3, the other a P5.

1. I decided to stop diddling with configuration of existing software and removed LPD, cups, hpijs -- everything. Used RH's package manager to clean the decks.

2. I downloaded the latest CUPS from www.cups.org, and the latest HPIJS from www.linuxprinting.org for the HP OfficeJet 5500.

3. installed cups (you know the routine: ./configure | make | make install as root)

4. installed HPIJS (same routine)

5. tested HPIJS ( # hpijs -h should show hpijs 1.6 Also, you should have the requisit ppd file (HP-OfficeJet_5500-hpijs.ppd) in /etc/cups/ppd, installed by the HPIJS make install. )

6. activated cups server (# /etc/init.d/cups start -- if cups is running (/etc/init.d/cups status) then use restart, vs start)

7. Checked for cups backend's knowledge of smb services by running lpinfo -v. The first run of this on one of my workstations did NOT show network smb so I had to enter a link, thusly:
#ln -s `which smbspool` /usr/local/libexec/cups/backend/smb
and then restart cups: # /etc/init.d/cups restart

8. Now cups is ready to create a printer, so pointing my browser to http://localhost:631 opened the browser cups admin utility, logging on as root with the root PW allowed me to select printers, new, and I declared the device to be Windows smb (that selection was at the bottom of the list for me).

9. The URI that worked for me was smb://[UName}:[Password]@[Machine Name]/[Sharename] Implied in that statement is that I had a user set up on XP for the purpose (I did). so on my network it looked like this:
smb://FordPrefectontPanic@dameon/HP_Officejet

10. One more note: While troubleshooting this problem earlier, I had changed the XP properties for the printer, specifically setting the print processor value from RAW to RAW [FF Appended]. I don't know if this is material, but since everything is working dandy, I'm not gonna mess with it.

Anyway at this point I printed a test page and was doin' the happy dance.

wrw3 - your Success Story on printing to an HP OfficeJet 5500 seems to be ideal for our LinuxAnswers section.

Would you be willing to submit it? It would be of help to the site and to the rest of our membership if you would do so (it would also put your instructions in a prominent place for anyone searching for it ).

If you are willing to do so, read this link on submitting an Answer beforehand.

Thanks.

XavierP: Will do. Give me a few days to generalize it a bit and move to compliance with the LinuxAnswers guidance in that forum and then I'll post. Thanks for the invite!
