PostgreSQL stopped after upgrade

I upgraded from 7.2.2 to 7.3.2 and for a few days had to use the services manager (RH 8.0) to stop and then start pgsql. Now I can't use psql. There is an indication that one version is running and psql is the other, and that the data files were created on the wrong one.
When I upgraded, I forgot to convert the file format first. I couldn't get up and running under 7.2 anymore, so I created new files under 7.3 and loaded them from backup (.out) files. Now those can't be found. If I reload, will I make these permanently inaccessible? I would just as soon get rid of 7.2 altogether at this point, but really need to get up and running again.
