PostgreSQL package upgrade question

Trying to install postgresql_7.4.6-6_i386.deb with dpkg -i
but it comes back with conflicts.

First conflict was libpgtcl so I removed this.
Running again it conflicted with libpgperl...

I don't want to remove everything!

Any suggestions how I can install this package.
The previous version was 7.2 which came with woody.

Well I went ahead and removed libpgperl and the postgresql-client.

Trying again to install gave me a list of other packages to upgrade so I guess it's a matter of plodding through them all.
