Pidgin not connecting on different network

I was sitting at Barnes & Noble yesterday adding programs to my Knoppix install and added Pidgin to take the place of my windows Trillian messenger. I had no problem there and was chatting away, but when I got home and started Pidgin again, I got "unable to connect" messages for Yahoo, MSN and facebook

After googling the issue, it seemed that the likely problem was Pidgin not refreshing the DNS (forgive me if im not using the correct term here). i didn't find any solution other than a patch "nm09-pidgin.patch" that I have no idea how to apply (noob alert). What should I do?

Thank you in advance for your help

Perhaps you could flush your DNS cache?

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/nscd restart;
service nscd restart;
service nscd reload;
Depending on your distribution, one of those above commands may work.

"nscd: unrecognized service" is what the console displays with any of those commands. I tried to install it from package manager but it would remove 50 other packages.

NSCD was a guess on my part - it is distribution dependent I suppose. Which distribution are you using? It may help in the future if you edit your profile and add your distribution there.

Sorry about that. I'm using Debian 6.0.2 Knoppix.
