Connecting, MSN protocol, Pidgin, Kopete. (Fedora 8)

Hi Everyone.
I am a new Linux user, and I can`t connect using MSN protocol in Pidgin, the computer displays the message "unable to connect". I tried Kopete and the same occurs, here the error message is: "There was an error while connecting to the MSN server. Error message: connection actively refused".
what should I do to connect? when I use google talk protocol it works fine with Pidgin and I use also Windows Live messenger in Windows working properly. Can you help me??

Thanks in Advance.

I would first try the web messenger: webmessenger.msn.com or something like that. See if it connects fine. If it does, then it's either up to your Pidgin/Kopete configuration, or the other chance is that they've changed something at Microsoft that disables non-Microsoft clients (they have done it at least once before, it took some time for the developers to "fix" it back then). If that would be the case, I'm fairly sure Pidgin's website had news about it (pidgin.im nowadays I think).

*Now that I tried with my Pidgin (2.2.1) I had no problems connecting to the messenger service. Not that I use it, but I used to have an account, which I can still use to test these things

Check that you have SSL enabled in your Pidgin version (read about that at pidgin.im) and your configuration: mine looks like the server is messenger.hotmail.com, port 1863, so those should work. They're the default values.

Hi,

Forgive the intrusion...

I can't talk about kopete since I don't use it, as for pidgin, it could be happening that fedora 8 has in their repos the version 2.3.0 of pidgin, is that's the case, and that's the version you're using, then the problem is because a bug in that version of pidgin and it's fixed in version 2.3.1

You could also run pidgin from any console in debug mode to catch the errors as they passed to stdout, like this:
Code:
$ pidgin -d

Regards

Hi b0uncer,
Thanks for you post. I tried webmessenger.msn.com and works fine but I would like to use Pidgin and Kopete (Pidgin 2.2.2-1.fc8; Kopete 3.5.8-7.fc8). I am using default configurations, messenger.hotmail.com server and port 1863 just like you. It`s strange because the same thing is happening with both programs, I visited pingin.im and I know there is a new version but I can`t find information about the current version problems and besides an older version works for you. In pidgin SSL is not enabled and i don know how to do it, there is a Certificate Manager and it`s possible to add SSL servers, when I do it the computer ask me to select a PEM certicate from "Places", I don know what is SSL and PEM exactly. Kopete doesn`t have options for SSL. What should I do? Can you help me?

Kind Regards,
Thanks in advance.

To start, why are you using pidgin as a root? O_o Unless you give some very important reason to do that, you should use pidgin (and the 99.9% of X programs) as a regular user. Don't know for sure, but that can be a part of the problem. Even if as regular (non root) user you're having troubles, elaborate:

Are you behind a firewall?

Always have this trouble? (Since installation)

Did you update any of those package before the problems start?

Partially solved...

Hi,
Thanks for your time and your help.
I partially solved my problem, I just choose the http method and both programs work, kopete and Pidgin.
Sorry for my ignorance and distraction, I should try this first before asking. By the way, Kopete isn`t working 100% I can see my contacts and check if they are online or not etc. but I can`t send messages, when I type something the message is not sent I become offline and it says: "The following message has not been sent correctly (Connection closed)". I think it`s a bug but I am not sure, and it`s another problem for me because I want to use a webcam also and I think this function is not available in Pidgin. If you a have a suggestion about this problem please reply.

Thanks in Advance.
